Le livre présente, en français seulement, la partie consacrée à Lettre à la prison dans l'ouvrage bilingue - italien et français - Marc Scialom. Impasse du cinéma. Esilio, memoria, utopie / Exil, mémoire, utopie (Artdigiland, 2012), sous la direction de Mila Lazić et Silvia Tarquini. Le livre source est consacré à l'oeuvre de Scialom - cinématographique et littéraire - dans son ensemble, et approfondit sa relation avec la Divine Comédie de Dante Alighieri. Le livre en français repropose les essais sur Lettre à la prison, avec une nouvelle introduction de la co-éditrice Silvia Tarquini, un nouvel essai sur la relation entre cinéma et politique dans les oeuvres de Scialom, Marker et Vautier, et la transcription de la "lettre à la prison", le monologue du personnage principal tel qu'on l'entend dans la bande-son du film.
